Preamble Creating awareness of hazards has become an increasingly important demand in today’s industry in order to protect workers properly from dangers encountered on their jobs. One important means to achieve this goal is to use safety signs that make people aware of hazards and risks and also educate them to choose certain behaviours to become able to work safely in their workplace. Today, professional suppliers offer all kinds of signs and additionally manufacture custom signs to order. The inter- national standards classify safety signs into the following subgroups: 1.0 Prohibition Signs: Show persons things that they MUST NOT do. 2.0 Mandatory Signs: Show persons actions they MUST DO. 3.0 Hazard Signs: Warn persons of certain dangers. These are also known as warning signs. 4.0 Safe Condition Signs: Show persons escape routes and help them to easily identify safety equipment. In addition to the safety signs various kinds of Floor Marking and Barrier Tapes are available. Floor marking signs usually provide information on adhesive tapes and barrier tapes keep people out of dangerous areas. A special subgroup are Pipeline Identification Labels. These mark pipelines in accordance with the substance that they transport and also provide information of the hazard. When choosing the appropriate safety sign the material and the size of the sign should be considered. The right size is important to create awareness to everybody and to make the sign visible from a safe distance. Therefore, the size of the sign should be determined by the hazard it warns of. Materials: When choosing the appropriate material for a safety sign the placement of sign should be considered. Adhesive signs are mainly used inside of a building, whereas signs made of PVC or aluminium can also be used outdoors. There are also other materials available for safety signs, therefore choosing the right material is often a question of the required durability of the sign. Here are some common materials, which safety signs are made of today: Self Adhesive Vinyl A flexible PVC, with a high tack adhesive backing. Suitable for interior & exterior use. For a good bond ensure the sign is fixed to a smooth, clean & non porous surface. Rigid PVC Plastic Available in various thicknesses, for interior & exterior use. Standard signs are 1mm thick. Rigid PVC Plastic/Self Adhesive Backed All standard safety sign can be produced in 1mm rigid plastic with a self adhesive backing for easy fixing. Foam PVC Suitable for interior & exterior use and available in various thicknesses. Typically used for double sided hanging, projecting and skip hook signs. Lightweight & dura- ble, available in various colours. Available upon request. Viewing distances: The following illustration gives you a good indication of the size of the sign you should be using: 5.0 Fire Fighting Signs: These are used to locate fire fighting equipment. 6.0 Supplementary Information Signs: Provide additional information to the above mentioned types of signs. 256
